Recreational fishing is under threat from bad policy

The WA State Government wants to ban fishing for dhufish, pink snapper, baldchin groper, breaksea cod and red snapper from north of Kalbarri to south of August every year from 15 October to 25 and from 1 February to 31 March.

We fully support the Government’s objective of regrowing stocks of these iconic fish – but there is a better way of doing it, without wreaking havoc on recreational fishing businesses, coastal towns – and the great Aussie family lifestyle.

Recreational fishing is a major economic contributor to many coastal towns, through direct fishing-related spending and general tourism spending (everything from fuel and accommodation, to meals and activities when not fishing).

Recreational fishing has social, family, educational and recreational values that just can’t have a price put on them.

So when there is a management alternative that could actually save more fish without the devastation of closures, shouldn’t that be the way to go?

Read how we can better regrow fish stocks, preserve our lifestyle and avoid serious economic loss.
